This tour reveals the many contrasting faces of Tallinn, its differing nature and styles of life.
The excursion will give you a good view about the best sights of Tallinn, the history of the beautiful Kadriorg Park and Palace, and Tallinn ancient city wall.
We shall start by bus in the green area of Kadriorg and Pirita and finish with a 2-hour walk in the romantic Old Town.
The Description of the Excursion
This tour starts with a drive to Kadriorg Park established at 1718 by Peter the Great in honour of his empress wife Catherine I. Its magnificent scale is enhanced by its setting on several levels, with upper and lower gardens in contrasting styles.
The Swan Pond with its picturesque island and the grottoes in the upper garden are a visual delight.
Stroll through the park towards Kadriorg Palace. The ornate palace rooms have been used as an Art Museum and following closure in recent years; Kadriorg has now reopened in its former glory.
Continue to visit the Song Festival Ground with a capacity of 300,000 spectators, where a short stop will provide you with an impression of the Song Festivals that are held on the grounds every five years where up to 30,000 performers sing. Continue to Pirita– the beachside location of the yachting complex built for the 1980 Olympic Games where also the 16th century ruins of St. Bridget’s Covent can be seen.
Next a short drive follows to Tallinn’s Upper Town, passing ancient walls and towers. Disembark the coach at Tall Hermann Tower from which flies the national blue, black and white flag. Walk up Toompea Hill to Palace Square to view the baroque Toompea Castle, now the residence of the Estonian Parliament, and to visit the Russian Orthodox Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, a dominating feature of Upper Town’s city skyline and home to numerous golden icons and mosaics. From there, walk along Tallinn’s medieval cobblestone streets to visit Gothic Dome Church (except during the services), known as St. Mary’s Cathedral. Then will descend via Short Leg Street to the Lower Town, to continue our tour with visit to the Town Hall Square and view the exterior of the Gothic Town Hall. Later you will have opportunity to visit Dominican Monastery. Continue your walk along St. Catherine’s Passage where shopping and browsing opportunities at the local craft workshops (including glass, leather, millinery and ceramic wares) wait you. Your guide will show you the way to Viru Gates– here finishes the tour. After this you can enjoy exploring more of Tallinn by yourself.
